parallel ports were not meant for anything other than printers, so when you get to hooking other things
to your parallel port, like scanners and tape drives, you're just asking for even more trouble,
especially when you try to daisy chain these devices.
SCSI is a faster and more reliable solution for scanners, tape drives, and external disk drives. The downside is that
you probably will have to open up your PC to install the SCSI card, whereas with parallel devices, you don't.
All the big rage today is USB (Universal Serial Bus) for hooking up all kinds of devices to your PC.
The newest PCs provide USB ports to hook up the keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, etc.
Of course, whatever external device you have has to be made for USB as well, but now you can buy
digital cameras, scanners, tape drives, all kinds of things that use USB.
You really need Windows 98 to use USB. Win95 OSR2 will work, but not as well as Win98.
